So why is Grasse the world's capital of perfume?

Grasse is tucked in the French Riviera, it has stunning architecture and landscape, but it is most well know for its production of fragrances.

Grasse has been the world's capital of perfume since the 18th century. However, before it was known for its fragrances, it was a tannery. The leather made in Grasse was famous throughout Europe. Unfortunately for the residents of this charming city, leather gives off an exceptionally bad smell, and hence the idea rose to perfume the products.

The craze for perfumed gloves was brought over from Italy by Catherine de Medici, and Grasse became renowned for its perfumed tanneries.

As time passed, the focus began to turn to the perfume itself, and fields of jasmine, tuberose, and lavender surrounded the city. The factories then became exclusively dedicated to fragrance production, and due to the precision and craftmanship, Grasse became the world's capital of perfumery.

Grasse's World Capital of Perfume

Finally, the city of Grasse has been recognized by UNESCO as a "World Heritage Site" for its expertise in perfume production and the preservation of its perfume-related traditions.

All of these factors combine to make Grasse the capital of perfume, and a must-visit destination for anyone interested in the art of perfumery.
